The Principalities — also called the Princedoms or Rulers — are the angelic order set over the nations, cities, and institutions of the earth: the celestial princes who guide the great collective destinies of humankind and command the angelic ranks below them. They head the third and lowest triad of the nine choirs, the orders that minister directly to the world of men.
The Guardians of Nations
Their name, from the Latin principatus, “princedom,” reflects their office as rulers over the affairs of peoples. The Principalities are the guardian-princes of nations, kingdoms, provinces, and cities — the angels to whom is entrusted the watch over the great corporate bodies of human life. This idea has deep roots in Jewish tradition, where each nation was thought to have its own presiding angelic prince (as Michael presides over Israel), contending in the heavens on behalf of the people under its care.
Commanders of the Angelic Host
The Principalities are also the leaders and directors of the angelic orders beneath them, transmitting the divine will and ensuring that the duties of the lower angels are carried out among humankind. They watch over the rise and fall of rulers, the welfare of communities, and the spread of religion and good order through the world. They are sometimes depicted crowned and bearing a scepter, emblems of the delegated rulership that is their charge.
Princes in the Service of Heaven
Ranked seventh among the nine choirs, the Principalities stand at the threshold between the cosmic administration above and the world of mortals below, just above the archangels and the angels who deal most directly with individual human beings. Their authority is collective and historical — the shaping of the destinies of whole peoples toward the good. In the Principalities, the angelic hierarchy expressed the ancient conviction that nations and cities are not godless accidents of history but are watched over, guided, and contended for by the unseen princes of heaven.
