Jophiel — “the Beauty of God” — is the archangel of beauty, wisdom, and divine illumination in Jewish and later angelic tradition: the angel who illuminates the mind with the light of wisdom, who guards the beauty of creation, and who is named as the cherub who drove Adam and Eve from Eden with the flaming sword. She is the radiance of divine understanding.
The Beauty of God
Jophiel (Iophiel, Yofiel, “the beauty of God” or “divine beauty”) is the archangel of beauty, wisdom, and illumination — the angel who embodies the splendour of the divine and the light of understanding. She (Jophiel is among the angels often regarded as feminine) is the patron of wisdom, art, beauty, and the illumination of the mind, the angel who pierces ignorance with the light of divine knowledge and reveals the beauty of God’s creation. In some Kabbalistic associations she is linked to the sefirah of Binah (Understanding) or to the radiance of wisdom.
The Guardian of Eden
Jophiel is identified in some traditions with the cherub set to guard the gate of Eden after the expulsion — the angel who, with the flaming, ever-turning sword, kept the way to the Tree of Life (a role also given to the cherubim or to other angels). In this aspect she is a guardian of the threshold of paradise and of sacred wisdom, keeping the holy from the profane. She is also named as a companion and teacher of the patriarchs, an angel of revelation and learning.
The Illuminator of the Mind
Jophiel is invoked for wisdom, illumination, beauty, creativity, and the clearing of the mind — the angel who brings the light of understanding to dispel ignorance and confusion, and who reveals and protects the beauty of the world. As the archangel of divine beauty and wisdom, she holds a place among the great archangels of the tradition, the radiance of the divine mind. In Jophiel, Jewish and angelic tradition gave form to beauty and illumination — the archangel of the beauty of God who lights the mind with wisdom, guards the beauty of creation and the gate of Eden, and reveals the radiance of divine understanding.
