Gullinbursti was the golden boar of the god Frey — a marvelous creature with bristles of pure gold that glowed in the dark, forged by the dwarves, who could run through air and water faster than any horse and light the way with his shining mane. He is one of the great treasures of the gods and the radiant steed of the Vanir lord of plenty.
The Boar of Golden Bristles
Gullinbursti (Old Norse Gullinbursti, “golden-bristled”), also called Slíðrugtanni, was a boar made entirely by the craft of the dwarves — not born but forged. He was one of the three treasures created by the dwarf-smiths Brokkr and Eitri in their famous contest, made by throwing a pig's skin into the forge-fire and working it with their craft. The boar that emerged had bristles of pure gold, and these golden bristles shone so brightly that they lit up the night, so that Gullinbursti could illuminate even the darkest places, glowing as he ran.
The Steed of Frey
Gullinbursti was given to Frey, the Vanir god of fertility, sunshine, prosperity and the harvest — a fitting mount for a god of plenty, for the boar was a symbol of fertility and abundance in the Norse world, and gold was the very emblem of wealth. Frey rode Gullinbursti or had the boar draw his chariot, and the golden creature could run through the air and over the sea, faster than any horse, his shining bristles lighting the way through the dark. Among the boar's appearances was the funeral of the god Baldr, where Frey came riding in a chariot drawn by Gullinbursti.
The Light and the Harvest
Gullinbursti carried a rich web of meaning. His golden, shining bristles have been connected to the rays of the sun, and to the golden grain of the ripe fields — fitting for the boar of the sun-and-harvest god Frey. The boar itself was sacred in Norse and Germanic culture, associated with fertility, with warriors (who wore boar-crested helmets), and with the feast. In Gullinbursti, the dwarves' craft, the gold of wealth, the light of the sun and the fertility of the boar all came together in a single radiant creature, the glowing golden steed of the god of plenty.
The Radiant Golden Boar
Gullinbursti endures as one of the most beautiful of the treasures of the Norse gods — the golden-bristled boar forged by the dwarves, the shining steed of Frey, who runs through air and sea and lights the dark with his glowing mane. He embodies the Norse delight in the dwarves' wondrous craft and the rich symbolism of the boar, the gold and the light: a creature of pure radiance and abundance, fit for the god of the sun and the harvest, glowing as he runs through the night.
Forged from a pig's skin in a dwarf's fire, the boar of golden bristles lights the dark as he runs through air and sea — the radiant steed of the god of plenty.
