The myth of Fulla: a Norse goddess and the trusted handmaiden and confidante of the queen Frigg, keeper of Frigg's treasure-casket and shoes and the

Jun 11, 20262 min readBy DrakoK

Fulla was a Norse goddess who served as the trusted handmaiden and confidante of the queen Frigg — the keeper of Frigg's treasure-casket and the bearer of her most private secrets, a maiden goddess of golden hair crowned with a golden band. Though her myths are few, her position at the very side of the queen of the gods marks her as one of the most intimate and trusted figures in all of Asgard.

The Handmaiden of Frigg

Fulla (Old Norse Fulla, perhaps “bountiful” or “fullness”) was an Aesir goddess, numbered among Frigg's attendant maidens, and the closest and most trusted of them all. She was described as a beautiful maiden goddess who wore her long golden hair flowing free, bound only by a golden band or snood about her head — the very image of a noble unmarried woman. As Frigg's handmaiden she held a place of great honour and intimacy at the heart of the divine household.

The Keeper of Secrets

Fulla's special duties marked her trusted status. She was the keeper of Frigg's casket (the eski), the box that held the queen of heaven's treasures and possessions; she looked after Frigg's shoes; and — most tellingly — she was the one to whom Frigg confided her secrets, sharing with Fulla the private counsels she would tell to no one else. To be the confidante of the all-knowing queen of the gods, the keeper of what Frigg would not even tell Odin, was a position of extraordinary trust. Fulla knew the secrets of the goddess who knew all fates.

The Gift from the Dead

Fulla appears, touchingly, in the aftermath of Baldr's death. When the goddess Nanna died of grief and went down to the realm of Hel with her husband Baldr, she sent gifts back up to the living from the land of the dead — and among them was a golden ring sent specially to Fulla. That the dead Nanna remembered Fulla with a personal gift speaks to the goddess's beloved place among the goddesses of Asgard, a cherished friend honoured even from beyond the grave.

The Trusted Confidante

Fulla endures as the trusted handmaiden of Frigg and the keeper of the queen's secrets — a golden-haired maiden goddess whose few appearances all underline her intimate, honoured place at the very center of the divine household. She embodies the value the Norse placed on faithful service and trusted friendship, the cherished companion who keeps another's secrets and treasures, the loyal confidante standing always at the side of the queen of the gods.

She kept the casket and the secrets of the queen of heaven — trusted with what Frigg would tell to no one else, not even the All-Father.
